WHY WOULD YOU NEED A DRIVING ASSESSMENT SERVICE?
It is important for older adults to consider a driving assessment to ensure their safety and the safety of those around them. It can help identify changes that need to be made to improve their driving. Certain health conditions can restrict one’s range of motion, strength or vision, and cognitive impairment can impact one’s ability to drive.
A driving assessment will help older adults make necessary adjustments to compensate for any of these changes, if possible. A driving assessment can also provide strategies to keep driving skills sharp and boost confidence in driving safely.
DRIVING ASSESSMENT SERVICE DIRECTORY
The driving assessment programs in this pamphlet have two components: a clinical evaluation and an on-road evaluation. These programs require referral forms, which can be found on their websites.
The clinical evaluation entails an assessment of the patient’s cognitive skills, medical history, and driving history by an occupational therapist. This commonly takes 1.5 to 2 hours.
The on-road evaluation is conducted with a certified driving instructor and an occupational therapist. They evaluate how the on-road driving is impacted by physical ability, cognition, visuospatial skills, and response time. This commonly takes 1 hour.
