Volunteering with the Maximizing Ageing Using Volunteer Engagement (MAUVE) Program

Recognizing that frail, older adults who are hospitalized are at a significantly higher risk of developing functional and/or cognitive declines in hospital, Sinai Health System introduced its evidence-informed and award-winning MAUVE (Maximizing Ageing Using Volunteer Engagement) Volunteer Program in 2010 to improve patient and system outcomes.

The MAUVE Volunteer Program is a unique partnership developed amongst Sinai Health System’s Departments of Social Work, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, and Volunteer Services and is designed to provide specialized training and opportunities to hospital volunteers to allow them to engage with at-risk frail older patients in order to help these patients to recover from their acute illness more quickly with minimal complications, minimize their time in hospital, and allow them a greater opportunity to return home.

MAUVE Volunteers are trained to stimulate the minds, bodies and spirits of our patients by listening and sharing memories with them, encouraging their participation in leisure and recreation activities like pet therapy, games, puzzles, strolls, group lunches, and music. MAUVE activities can further take place in common areas, or by the bedside.

For more information about the MAUVE Program or to learn how to become a MAUVE Volunteer, please contact Mount Sinai Hospital’s Volunteer Services by phone at 416-586-4800 ext. 8200 or by email at volunteer.msh@sinaihealthsystem.ca.
