About the Ben and Hilda Katz Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Medical Unit
Our ACE Medical Unit meets the unique needs of our older medical patients admitted to our hospital through the Emergency Department who are identified as being at the highest risk of losing their independence. This specialized 28-bed inpatient medical unit located on 10 North, University Tower, at Mount Sinai Hospital has been designed to maintain its patients’ physical and cognitive abilities, prevent functional decline and promote a healthy recovery. It also preserves our patients’ independence through the support of specialized nurses and other professionals working in partnership with their medical teams and the use of specialized care protocols designed for ACE eligible patients. With early transitional care planning integrated into the care of ACE patients, our interprofessional teams work closely with patients, their families and caregivers to empower patients to return home and live independently whenever possible.
While we try and get every ACE designated patient to our ACE Medical Unit, we sometimes are unable to do so when the unit is already full. ACE designated patients are still provided the same level of care under an ACE Care Protocol to ensure everyone gets the best possible care.
How to Get Referred
ACE Medical Unit Patients are identified by their medical teams during their admission to hospital from the Emergency Department or later in a patient’s hospitalization.
