About the UHN Older Adults with Cancer Clinic
The University Health Network’s Older Adults with Cancer Clinic (OACC), based at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, identifies the unique needs of older patients with cancer. Patients of the OACC benefit from the expertise and care of nurses and a geriatrician who provide personalized care plans and help to optimize their experience along their cancer journey. The Clinic focuses on seeing patients in the pre-treatment phase and those who are on active cancer treatment.
Your Appointment at the UHN Older Adults with Cancer Clinic
The UHN Older Adults with Cancer Clinic (OACC) is located at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre on the 5th floor.
If you have a consultation to the OACC, you will be assessed by a Geriatric Oncologist and Geriatric Oncology Nurse (doctor and nurse that specialize in cancer care for older adults). Please bring your current medications to the consultation. The consultation usually lasts 1-2 hours, and includes an interview and physical exam.
During the interview part of the consultation, the team may speak with you about:
- Help with cancer treatment decision making
- Falls/difficulty walking
- Your medications
- Nutrition and diet
- Memory and mood concerns
- Social supports
- How to manage personal care and other daily activities at home
- Constipation and incontinence
- Fatigue
- Any other issues you may need help with
The physical exam will include short fitness tests such as walking the hall, getting up off of a chair, squeezing a handle, etc.
At the end of the consultation, the OACC team will provide recommendations to you and your oncology team.
How To Get Referred
To be referred to the Older Adults with Cancer Clinic at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, patients must be older adults having their cancer care looked after by a University Health Network physician.
