The MSH/UHN Geriatrics rotation offers a comprehensive learning experience. Trainees join the multidisciplinary inpatient consultation service at either the University Avenue (MSH/TGH/PMH), Toronto Western Hospital (TWH) or Toronto Rehab (TRI) site for 4 weeks.
Trainees are scheduled into multiple outpatient experiences during their rotation at affiliated hospital ambulatory clinics including general geriatric medicine clinics (MSH/TRI/Bickle), falls clinic (TRI), memory clinic (TWH), geriatric day hospital (TRI), telemedicine clinic (MSH), geriatric oncology clinic (PMH); and community outreach experiences.
Educational sessions are built in to the weekly schedule, with 2-4 hours of formal teaching each week. Formal teaching include weekly “Geriatric Giants” seminars, a dementia seminar by a behavioural neurologist, osteoporosis rounds and allied health seminars that address topics such as capacity and elder abuse, polypharmacy, and mobility.
The Division of Geriatric Medicine Residency Training Program offers electives in Geriatric Medicine and Geriatric Rehabilitation.
Geriatric Medicine elective is open to residents training in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Neurology, Geriatrics, Orthopedics.
Processing a request for an elective varies based on the hospital through which the resident is pursuing their residency program.
How to Apply
All medical trainees, both University of Toronto affiliated and non-affiliated, wishing to take an elective under the supervision of a University of Toronto postgraduate program director/training program need to first contact the Educational Programs Administrator, Libby Mendonca at Libby.Mendonca@sinaihealth.ca
If their request is granted, they will be redirected to register through the Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) portal: https://electives.pgme.utoronto.ca/pgme/electives/index.cfm
Once registration through PGME is complete, the Medical Education office will notify the resident on the next steps to complete the process.
University of Toronto Affiliated Hospitals
Residents from Mount Sinai Hospital, Women’s College Hospital, St. Michael’s Hospital, University Health Network, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center and Baycrest Health Sciences should follow the aforementioned process.
Across Canada & International
Residents from non-affiliated hospitals should contact the Educational Programs Administrator to inquire about rotation availability. Should there be availability, they will be directed to the Geriatric Medicine Postgraduate Program Administrator.
These residents should meet the following criteria:
- Registered in a postgraduate residency or Clinical Fellowship training program
- Have appropriate authorization from the sponsor and/or home university
- Must be eligible for a CPSO Certificate of Registration
- Be eligible for a work permit if neither Canadian citizen nor Permanent Resident
- Have appropriate funding
- Have malpractice insurance valid for the province of Ontario
A minimum of 4-6 months is required to process international trainees’ request.
