Observership, also known as shadowing, allows students to follow a geriatrician for up to a month in order to gain experience and exposure in clinical environments.
To be classified as an observer you must meet the following minimum criteria:
- Enrolled full-time in a medical program at an accredited Canadian, U.S. or International University (excluding the University of Toronto) and currently in year 1 or 2 of your studies
- Cannot be currently enrolled in a postgraduate medical training program
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the observership program is currently suspended. Check this page regularly for information on when the observership program resumes.
For University of Toronto affiliated students: Mount Sinai Hospital’s Medical Education office will process their request. All University of Toronto student requests for observership status must first be reviewed and approved by the educational programs administrator. To initiate the observership request process, University of Toronto students are encouraged to contact the educational programs administrator, Libby Mendonca via email at Libby.Mendonca@sinaihealth.ca or by calling 416- 586-4800 ext. 6641, to express an interest in completing an observership with the Geriatrics program at Mount Sinai Hospital. They will then need to fill out an application form to be sent back to the educational programs administrator. Once the educational programs administrator approves the request, the Medical Education office will contact the student to finalize the process.
For non- University of Toronto affiliated students, the process is the same as above, with the exception that the Medical Affairs office processes their request. Consequently, non-University of Toronto students are encouraged to contact Melody Everson at the Medical Affairs office via Melody.Everson@sinaihealth.ca
Once the educational programs administrator is notified of a student’s interest, the application form needs to be filled out and sent back for approval, before the process can be finalized.
There is no fee associated with submitting this application.
